Robert Anderton, Road Safety Officer for Caerphilly, retired on 24 April 2009.

Colleagues from Caerphilly County Borough Council, Capita Symonds, Road Safety Wales and from the dim and distant past, met at the Cross Hands Public House in Cross Hands, to bid him farewell. Although Robert knew that a surprise party had been arranged, he did not know what awaited him.

Sandra Bennett, had decorated the function room with photographs of Robert and his family through the years, and had also arranged a ‘This is Your Life’ type presentation.

Robert’s two daughters, who had suffered the ‘Father of the Bride’ speeches at their recent weddings, took the opportunity to take revenge with a witty take on life with their father. Steve Baker and Tony Rosser, former colleagues, reminisced about life in road safety and the many visits to the Royal Gwent Hospital! Finally there was an appearance from those two well-known Road Safety characters Iolo and Tufty.

Everyone wished Robert and Patricia a long and happy retirement, and Robert has assured his daughters that he will apply himself assiduously to the spending of their inheritance!

Caerphilly will not be without a Road Safety Officer, however, with Lorry Davies taking over the reins. Lorry has spent time with Robert on the run-up to his retirement, and we are sure that she will soon become a familiar figure in Caerphilly Road Safety.
