The Bedwas Neighbourhood Policing Team is running road safety days at local primary schools, to help reinforce how important it is to stay safe on local roads.
Pupils at Coed-y-Brain Primary School in Llanbradach were visited by local officers - PC Karen Hartshorne, PCSO Bev Coggan and PCSO Chris Armstrong - together with road traffic officer, PC David Thomas, on Friday 5th June for a day full of activities.
Officers spoke to the children, who are between the ages of eight and ten, about road safety issues and speeding. They reinforced how the children should be aware of traffic along roads, including how and where to cross roads safely, and to always ‘stop, look and listen’.
The pupils took part in a number of activities to emphasise how to stay safe, and to recognise the dangers of vehicles travelling over the speed limit.
They put this to the test, and used a Digital Speed Device along the main street through Llanbradach. The portable speeding device highlights to motorists the speeds that they are travelling as they approach.
PCSO Bev Coggan, said:
“It is important that we reinforce to the school pupils how to stay safe on local roads, and how to cross roads safely. By using the Digital Speed Device, we also hope to highlight to motorists that speed limits are in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and road users and that travelling at excessive speeds can have fatal consequences.
The pupils really enjoyed the day and I hope that they take away some valuable tips to put into practice. The Bedwas Neighbourhood Policing Team will also be visiting other local schools throughout the area over the next week.”
Neighbourhood Officers will also be visiting St. James Primary School in Lansbury Park and Graig-y-Rhacca Primary School over the next couple of weeks to speak to pupils about road safety.
At St James Primary, the pupils will also be handing out leaflets about illegal parking to motorists outside the school.
