Education Reminder for Drivers

Drivers were stopped outside school entrances during the morning drop off and afternoon pick up times for not wearing a seatbelt or using a mobile phone, during a crackdown to make Caerphilly roads safer.

Lorry Davies, Road Safety Officer for Caerphilly organsied the Mini Options Event and teamed up with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Gwent Police, to help educate motorists about the dangers of driving without a seatbelt, or while using a mobile phone.

Motorists were stopped outside Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Gwyddon and Cwmcarn Primary in Caerphilly Borough. Offenders were offered the choice of either paying a fine, plus three penalty points for using a mobile, or watching a 10-minute presentation of the consequences of being distracted at the wheel.

During the one hour operation a total of 27 drivers were stopped, of which 25 were not wearing a seatbelt, including 1 child; and 2 were using a mobile.

Only one driver chose to pay the fixed penalty rather than watch the presentation. Out of those who did view it, all motorists thought it was beneficial and every participant thought education rather than fines was worthwhile. One motorist said that “it was an excellent way of reminding everyone of the consequences”.
