Over 4,000 year 6 pupils attended Crucial Crew this year. The event, which was held over a four week period at the Safety Zone at Treforest, is organised by Gwent Police Schools Liaison Team. The objective is to give the children an experience that will help them deal with potentially dangerous situations and develop useful life skills.
The Road Safety Team, led by Lorry Davies, the Road Safety Officer for Caerphilly, organised a workstation with a presentation themed on the importance of wearing a seatbelt. This was very well received by both pupils and teachers alike.
The consequences that could occur from choosing not to wear a seat belt were shown in the Department for Transport’s ‘Think’ video titled, ‘Julie Knew Her Killer’. This award winning advertisement provoked frank discussions of the children’s own experiences of not wearing seatbelts and how they felt about other vehicle occupants who did not belt-up and so put everyone’s safety at risk.
Lorry Davies, Road Safety Officer for Caerphilly said, “According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA), simply wearing a seat belt increases your chances of surviving a collision by as much as 60%. It is important to get the message across to people as young as possible so that belting-up becomes a way of life.”
