The 2009 Anti-Drink Drive Poster Competition presentation took place at County Hall on 23 November 2009.
Despite the dreadful weather, winners and their families joined dignitaries from Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire and Torfaen in the Council Chamber to see the prizes awarded.
Superintendant Nigel Russell of Heddlu Gwent Police presented the prizes, and in his address to the audience said:
“In the recent Summer Anti drink and drugs campaign 40% of drivers who tested positive were under 25 years of age. The young people here can help show their friends and families how drinking and then driving can wreck lives. They are the future motoring public of this country and their support in this initiative is invaluable. You are all to be thanked for your efforts and contribution. We want others to learn from your lead.”
Tredegar Comprehensive School had particular success in the senior category of the Competition, Emma Cavender-Morris, a teacher from the school said:-
“We are very pleased as a school to have so many winners from Tredegar Comprehensive School. The talent of our pupils clearly show and the important message is reflected in their beautiful art work. They are a credit to us and the county.”
And the winner of the junior section was Sam Barton from Greenmeadow School said:-
“It’s very important that people don’t drink and drive for the safety of drivers and passengers. I am really excited to have won the competition and have given up my football practice to attend because it’s so important!”
The junior and senior winning posters will be printed up and distributed around Gwent, to reinforce the message of the forthcoming Christmas Drink Drive Campaign.
