Mothers, Babies & Toddlers, Salvation Army Hall – Abergavenny

There’s nothing like a baby or toddler which focuses the mind more on safety. This occasion was no exception.

The little ones were a bit linguistically challenged, but parents had plenty to say on their behalf.

And the hot chestnut? Always child car seats. If you thought struggling to put up a deck chair on Brighton pier was bad enough, it little compares with the contortions parents find themselves in when fitting a child restraint.

One mother had been told six months after fitting her seat that it was back-to-front! This is just one in a series of difficulties parents face and include many others:

• Not being heavy enough to tighten the fittings;
• Feeling unwell;
• Baby arrived early;
• Not all retailers offer fitting advice;
• Finding a seat to fit the vehicle.

So, with very few parents having a degree in this subject, it is not surprising that many surveys report:

“Two thirds of child car seats are not fitted correctly1 and over 83% of drivers are not aware of UK car seat legislation reveals research by the AA2 and Britax.”

And so, these parents and their children at Abergavenny don’t quite have the subject of child car seats wrapped up but certainly have seat belt wraps for their car seats. Just a pity they don’t come in different flavours!
