Advice for Horse Riders

Riding a horse on the public road can be very hazardous. It is important to try and make the situation as safe as possible for rider, horse and drivers alike. Riders should be fully aware of the Highway Code and how it affects them.

Before a horse is taken on the public roads ensure that:

  • All tack fits well and is in good condition
  • Make sure you can control the horse

Never ride a horse without a saddle or bridle. If you are taking a horse out into traffic for the first time it may be a good idea to ride with other less nervous horses, until the horse is more confident to be ridden on its own.

While riding on the road it pays to remember some simple tips that will help to keep you safer.

You should:

  • Keep to the left
  • Keep both hands on the reins unless you are signalling
  • Keep both feet in the stirrups
  • Not carry another person
  • Not carry anything which might affect your balance or get tangled up with the reins
  • Keep a horse you are leading to your left
  • Keep any younger or more inexperienced horses and riders to the nearside, away from traffic

Top Tip – When leading a horse always keep it to your left. This gives much greater control over the animal on the road allowing you to turn the horse’s hind quarters away from danger, and in towards the pavement, quickly and safely.
