Before Towing
- Make sure your horse trailer is regularly serviced and maintained. You wouldn’t leave your car standing idle for 11 months of the year and then expect it to be fit for a 300-mile journey would you? Tyres and brakes, in particular, need careful attention.
- Check your tow vehicle. Is it heavy enough for the trailer and horses you´re planning to tow? In particular check and replenish engine fluid levels and tyre pressures. Towing puts enormous extra strain on any vehicle, parts such as the suspension, brakes and transmission get a very hard time, so make sure everything is in top working order before you set off.
- Be aware that the vehicle and trailer will take much longer to stop, accelerate and turn than a vehicle on its own.
