Speed

Statistics show that the main cause of road traffic collisions is a combination of inappropriate or excessive speed with some form of human error. Driving too fast was one of the main causes of road traffic collisions on built up roads in Gwent last year. Furthermore, research concludes that:

  1. Approximately 1 in 3 road traffic collision deaths are speed related.
  2. 7 out of 10 drivers regularly break the speed limit - usually by about 5mph.
  3. An average family car travelling at 35mph will need an extra 21 feet (6.4 metres) to stop than one travelling at 30mph.
  4. If you hit a cyclist or pedestrian at 35mph the force of the impact increases by more than a third than if you were travelling at 30mph.
  5. Reducing your speed by an average of 1mph will cut road traffic collision frequency by 5 per cent.
  6. On urban roads 76 per cent of cars will exceed the speed limit if the road is clear.

Using speed responsibly isn´t just about keeping within a set limit or avoiding penalties. It is important to use your own sense of judgement and drive within your abilities as well as to the conditions of the road. Darkness and the unpredictable British weather impact on visibility and road conditions, meaning special care needs to be taken when driving under these circumstances.

In 2006, 1398 people were killed or injured on Gwent roads. By using your own judgement to drive at a speed that is legal and safe for the conditions of the road, you can help us to prevent the pain and suffering road traffic collisions cause to victims and families in our area.
