Noseweight and Stability
- Using a flat piece of wood over a bathroom scales and under the nose jockey wheel check the “nose weight” of the trailer. Consult your trailer and car handbook to establish the correct “nose weight” for your trailer. Most cars state 50kgs to 75kgs.
- As long as the trailer is evenly loaded, nose weight is correct and the whole outfit sits level on the road you are unlikely to experience a problem with snaking. However, in high winds or while passing HGVs some trailers can begin snaking and a stabiliser could be required. These increase the friction between towing vehicle and trailer reducing the tendency for it to ‘wag its tail’.
