Music Challenge

This is an initiative that was started in 2006 with the aim of injecting road safety information into Comprehensive Schools and other organisations with the age group 11-18.

The young people are tasked with composing a piece of music, of any genre, on an Anti Drink Drive theme. The music is performed at an evening event at a theatre, with judges to select the top three winners.

The event is attended by Gwent Police, teachers, parents, Unitary Authority members and the Capita Symonds Road Safety Team.

The winning band receives £250 for the band and the same for the school music department;
The runner up receives £150 for the band and the same for the school music department; and
The third place band receives £100 for the band and the same for the school music department.

Each band also receives a shield and each entrant gets a certificate. The winning band also gets special, music themed, individual prizes.

The winning band also gets a chance to perform live on Nation Radio with their song contributing to an Anti Drink Drive advert for Christmas, aired during the first two weeks of December to coincide with the launch of the Gwent Police Anti-Drink Drive Campaign

This initiative has been adopted by many authorities in Wales, England and even Ireland.
