Safer Young Drivers in Gwent

Over 200 young drivers in Gwent have committed themselves to becoming better drivers by taking part in the increasingly popular post-test training course, Pass Plus Cymru.

The course comprises two parts, commencing with an interactive discussion session held on a weekday evening at a local fire station. An approved Driving Instructor and the local Road Safety Officer lead the session, with invaluable input from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. Participants also have the opportunity to discover exactly what is kept inside the lockers of a fire appliance.

The second part consists of eight hours driving tuition with an Approved Driving Instructor, and focuses on driving on the motorway, night driving, coping with busy towns and cities, how to tackle rural roads safely and thinking ahead.

The cost of all this additional training is just £20. The benefits include:

• better driving skills
• less chance of a collision or injuring yourself, friends and other road users
• more chance of lower insurance premiums

Pass Plus Cymru courses take place in various locations throughout Gwent at least twice every month, with upcoming courses in Cwmbran on 3 April, and Caerphilly on 16 April. The scheme is administered on behalf of the Local Authorities by Capita Symonds’ Road Safety Team.
