Over the past 18 months more than 2700 children from primary and infant schools across the Caerphilly Borough have completed Kerbcraft, an innovative road safety scheme that aims to cut down the number of children injured or killed on the road.
The scheme teaches children how to be safe pedestrians by providing them with practical roadside training. The children are taken out of school by specially trained volunteers and taught 3 main life saving skills to help them stay safe at the roadside.
Kerbcraft has been a great success and we would like to thank everyone involved especially the volunteers and schools. Children face many dangers on our roads and this scheme is designed to show children how to stay safe and develop good behaviour patterns that will hopefully keep them safe.
Tracy Plant and Jessica Dix are the Child Pedestrian Training Co-ordinators for Caerphilly County Borough Council who manages the Kerbcraft project. They have five kerbcraft assistants, Adele Phelps, Andrea Williams, Jeanette Aldridge, Vicky Knight and Judith Gould.
CCBC are probably the first authority in Wales to take Kerbcraft into nearly every primary and infant’s school in the county borough, which is a fantastic achievement. The schools that have not benefitted from kerbcraft have particular training site problems, which are currently being investigated to overcome the difficulties. The scheme is currently funded by the Welsh Assembly Government who realised the importance of the scheme and have set a target of reducing child pedestrian casualties by 50% by the year 2010.
To help the project continue in each school we need to recruit volunteers i.e. parents, grandparents. If you feel that you would like to help save children’s lives then please do not hesitate to contact Jessica or Tracy on 01495 235078/235427 for more information.
