By popular demand, a Pass Plus Cymru course was held for the first time at Monmouth Fire Station on Wednesday 20 February 2008.
Six candidates attended the session, and took part in an interactive discussion relating to driving, before a presentation by Darren Cleaves of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. Everyone then adjourned to the appliance bay where Darren and the rest of his team explained the equipment that would be used at the scene of a road traffic collision.
Candidates will then, at a time to suit them, take part in a driving session over eight hours. They will share this session with another candidate from their course, and will spend four hours driving and four hours observing. This additional driving session, delivered by an Approved Driving Instructor, will take them onto the motorway and dual carriageways, rural roads and town roads. Hints and tips on driving in the dark and in bad weather will also be given, together with advice regarding defensive driving, hazard awareness, concentration, speed, drug and drink driving, safe attitudes and behaviour.
All of this additional information and driving tuition costs just £20 under the Pass Plus Cymru Scheme. The remainder of the cost is covered by the Local Authority, using money allocated to it by the Wales Assembly Government for Road Safety Initiatives.
Young drivers between the ages of 17 and 25 are sadly over-represented in the killed and seriously injured statistics in Wales, and this enhanced Pass Plus course aims to help address this imbalance. In addition, drivers who take a Pass Plus Cymru course could make savings on their insurance premiums as well as becoming safer drivers. A sound return on an investment of £20 and ten hours of time.
