Children from across Monmouthshire visited Monmouthshire County Council’s Chairman to collect awards commending them for their efforts in walking to school.
Children from 23 primary schools took part in this year’s Walk to School Week, a campaign that asks parents, pupils and teachers to think about their journey to and from school and the many benefits of making it on foot.
Chairman Sue White said: “It’s terrific to recognise the fantastic effort made by our schools. We encourage all schools within Monmouthshire to prepare school travel plans to address any issues that children and parents encounter on their journey to school – we are happy to help them to identify specialist services and funding they can access to make the walk more pleasurable.”
Abigail Davies, Monmouthshire County Council’s School Travel Plan Co-ordinator, said:
“During the week the children were given leaflets, stickers and activity sheets to help them collate information about what mode of travel the children took, so that information can be used as supporting information for a school travel plan.
“Walking helps protect the body from heart disease obesity, depression, some types of diabetes and colon cancer. It’s great that pupils have embraced getting fit whilst also cutting pollution and making new friends on their walk to school.”
