Crucial Crew 2008

All first year comprehensive children paid their annual visit to Crucial Crew this year at Newport Barracks.

Science, History and Road Safety met to produce extraordinary effects. Groups of children were dazzled in every sense of the word as they witnessed the effects of fluorescent, reflective and luminous materials.

In a pitch-black room, everything starts off in darkness as the children discover how important the sense of sight is – now that it is impaired or light-deprived.

They are challenged to see situations from a driver’s viewpoint: that travelling at just 30 mph in the dark, drivers cannot see pedestrians wearing dark clothes.

The children have the opportunity to find out just how easy it is to remedy the problem by experiencing for themselves what materials to wear and when those materials are most effective.

That may be the Science and Road Safety dealt with – but what about the History? Well, casualties were not limited to those caused by the conflict during World War II. Road accidents doubled during the blackout.

With some authorities currently experimenting with turning off their street lights, many are concerned that history might just repeat itself.
