Stopping Gwent´s Boy and Girl Racers

The work done by Heddlu Gwent Police neighbourhood policing teams is being celebrated in a series of advertisements over the next month. This story, about how the issue of boy and girl racers in Abergavenny is being tackled, is one of them. Look out for more.

We´re also out and about publicising our police pledge - come to Sainsbury´s in Newport on Friday April 2nd to meet officers, talk over your concerns and learn more about what you can expect from us.

After growing increasingly concerned at the way drivers were speeding and driving anti-socially in her neighbourhood, Abergavenny resident Liz Davies attended a PACT meeting and raised her concerns with the local Neighbourhood Policing Team.

The team prioritised the issue, which included youngsters driving their cars with excessive noise and speed, and implemented an ongoing initiative to tackle it. At the end of January PCSO Ruth Moyse as well as PC´s, other PCSO´s and special constables took part in the operation and using the speed detection device issued more than 20 warnings along Merthyr Road, Brecon Road and Monmouth Road in the Grofield Ward.

Liz Davies said:

"I was very impressed with the Pact meeting and the way we, as residents, could raise our concerns and they could be built on to form priorities. Secondly I like the way officers followed up and took the time to talk to people about the concerns and I believe that adds to the success officers have achieved Knowing that this will stay a priority until the issue goes away is very reassuring. I am very impressed"
