Pupils Enjoy The Benefits Of Walk To School Week

Healthy schoolchildren in Oakdale have been walking their way to success as part of a special competition organised as part of the recent Walk to School Week.

The theme of this year’s event was independence and over 7,000 pupils from 28 locals schools took part in the challenge. The pupils were given the opportunity to record how far they walked to and from school each day.

They did this by the whole class wearing pedometers from Monday morning to Friday afternoon. Pupils from the winning school, Rhiw-Syr-Dafydd Junior in Oakdale, walked a massive 1,560,889 steps, which converted to 781 miles – which is equivalent to walking to the European Parliament in Brussels and back again.

It was a very close fought competition with Hengoed Primary coming in second. Both teachers and children taking part thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the children were able to use their results in IT and Maths

All other pupils in all the schools taking part recorded what they saw and heard while walking to school and completed wall charts relating to whether they walked or came by car. There was a noticeable reduction in congestion outside schools during walk to school week.

The next walking initiative will take place in October and will last the whole month.
