Mr Andrew Haigh, teacher at Cantref Primary, Abergavenny, retired at the end of the Summer Term and this is no small loss to Road Safety.
Whatever challenge or task we at the Road Safety team set, Andy would always be one step ahead.
His Road Safety C.V. is extensive. Apart from cycle training (he must have trained in the region of 700 children in total), Andy campaigned on everything from cycle helmets to seat belts.
He organised Road Safety fashion shows, assemblies, coordinated the Junior Road Safety Officer Scheme at Cantref. Even wrote poetry to further the cause of reducing road casualties…
BE SAFE! BE SEEN!
Janet, John and Jim,
As you see are quite dim,
Leading the pack,
Dressed all in black,
Roaming round the town,
Wandering up and down,
Creating possible danger,
For the unsuspecting stranger.
In the fading light,
Of a dull winter’s night,
They might seem cool,
Playing the fool,
Acting tough and mean,
Hard to be clearly seen,
Little more than a shadow,
Accidents will surely follow.
Jack, Jill and James Knight,
Have surely got it right,
For night or day,
At school or play,
In the street or park,
During daylight or dark,
For travellers in a car,
They are seen clearly from afar.
All three dress to thrill,
It doesn’t take much skill,
Their clothes are bright,
Yellow or white,
