Crucial Crew is now a regular in the curriculum calendar of Gwent schools. The programme involves Road Safety Officers addressing Year 6 and 7 pupils from Gwent on how to keep safe on and near the roads. Both the displays set up as well as the talks conducted target this age group, as, as road accident statistics show, the casualty rate increases dramatically in this age group. This is often due to making the transititon to comprehensive school and the new hazards encountered on their unfamiliar daily journey to their new school.
This year´s agenda focuses on high visibility and the importance of being seen. Curriculum topics such as; the need to wear brightly coloured clothing during the day, and reflective apparel at night, in order to be most visible to other road users are included in the presentation, as well as demonstrations as to how different types of colours and materials are affected by varying levels of light.
