Cycling is a fun and popular means of transport for children as well an enjoyable leisure activity, as well as a means of keeping them fit and healthy. However, built up areas with a range of obstacles and busy traffic flow can make young or inexperienced cyclists vulnerable road users
How you can improve your child´s safety
- Make sure your child wears a cycle helmet, every time they ride their bike. This will lessen the impact of any accident they may have.
- Check that the bike fits them - if it is too large or too small, it will be uncomfortable to ride and even more difficult to handle.
- Encourage them to wear clothes and accessories that help them to be seen by other road users (refer to the ´being seen´ section).
- Enquire as to whether your child´s school offers a cycle training programme to teach students basic cycle safety.
- A bicycle used on the road is a vehicle and not a toy. meaning it is subject to the rules of the Road Traffic Act. Ensure your child knows this, this is YOUR responsibility as a parent.
