Leading By Example

The best way to teach road safety to your child is to practice with them. It is important to remember, however, that as your child grows the way that they accept and take in information will change. Younger children learn by imitating others - especially their parents, but older children are generally influenced by their peers and tend to ignore any advice that makes them feel or look ´babyish´.

Try to discuss safety issues with them in a logical way and explain reasons for actions, potential dangers and possible outcomes. This will help them learn to recognise situations that could be unsafe. Above all, when you are on or near the roads with your child, it is very important to practise what you preach. Always remember to set a good example when you are out walking, cycling, or travelling in the car with your child.
