Kerbcraft

A national strategy for child pedestrian safety financed by the Welsh Assembly Government Originally developed on the Drumchapel Estates in Glasgow, Scotland, Kerbcraft was designed as a means to reduce the number of children killed or seriously injured on the estate roads. Due to it´s great success the scheme was extended throughout the UK. In April 2002 Gwent commenced it´s involvement by way of funding from the Welsh Assembly Government. This funding allowed the recruitment Child Pedestrian Training Co-ordinators in order to implement the scheme.

Kerbcraft teaches children aged from 5 to 7 how to be safe pedestrians by taking them onto real roads and showing then how to be safe. Volunteers who have been trained by the local Pedestrian Training Co-ordinator take the children out of school and into real life situations in order to teach them these valuable skills. The children learn the three main skills to crossing the road safely:

  1. Choosing Safe Places and Routes to Cross the Road
Children are helped to recognise dangers and hazards and identify alternative crossing places
  2. Crossing Safely at Parked Cars
Children are taught how to use a safe strategy for crossing by parked cars-when avoiding them is impossible
  3. Crossing Safely Near Junctions
Children are introduced to the problems of simple and complex junctions, and taught a strategy for looking systematically in all directions

Each skill is practised at several different locations over a period of 4-6 weeks in liaison with the school and its timetable.
Volunteers Wanted

Young children are being killed and injured on roads DAILY. Practical roadside training such as that provided in Kerbcraft has proved the BEST way of helping young children to keep safe when near or crossing roads. To ensure the continuing success of the Kerbcraft, volunteers are required at every school involved in order to provide adequate supervision for children participating in the program. If you can spare 2 hours a week, to be a KERBCRAFT volunteer, YOU could make all the difference.

Who can be a volunteer?

Mums, Dads, grandparents, Aunties, Uncles, or simply friends of the school. Volunteers will be given full training and support.
