Schemes

A School Travel Plan is a broad description for a package of measures that aim to increase travel to school by healthier and more environmentally friendly methods than the car. A growing number of Schools are beginning to develop School Travel Plans in a bid to reduce school gate congestion and promote alternate forms of transport. Schools are given advice and assistance in developing ways to achieve this goal, often by encouraging:

• Walking Buses (see below) and pedestrian training(refer to Kerbcraft)
• Cycle training schemes and bicycle clubs
• increased awareness and education of road safety amongst parents

If a school is seen to have demonstrated that they have been successful in implementing some or all of the above, applications can then be made for funding of larger scale projects that can further enhance both safety and alternate transport. These projects can include:

• construction of pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes
• erection of foot bridges
• building of cycle sheds
