Under Sevens Organisers

altUnder Sevens Organisers (USOs) play a very important role in educating our children in the dangers associated with the road and how to keep yourself safe. Their role involves visiting infant schools and nurseries in the area and delivering the road safety message in a fun but informative way. The USO´s use a variety of visual aids, such as puppet shows, dressing up clothes, posters, and mini-versions of things such as zebra crossings in order to perform stories and songs that help to emphasise safety points.

These entertaining and informative sessions help make the calthildren more aware of roads and their dangers from an early age, thus preparing them for junior school where they are more than likely to encounter road traffic and the hazards that it incorporates. Currently there are ten USOs operating throughout Greater Gwent, each with there our area to cover.

altThe USOs are also now including the Foundation Phase into their delivery. This has already been apparent in their lessons but now we aim to completely fall into line with this style of approach, as do all Primary Schools in Wales as from September 2008.

This involves presenting the same lessons to all Early Years groups in Gwent altat the same time. All lessons involve small bites of information on staying safe around the road.  Also, focussed road safety information and targets are left with the teacher on a worksheet for the pupils to work on ready for the next USO visit so the task can be worked on in a play-like situation as pupil led, rather than teacher driven as before.
