Originally developed in Australia and now spreading around the globe, walking buses provide a safe, supervised, and healthy alternative for your childs journey to school.
The concept of the walking bus involves children being escorted to school along a set route, picking up more ´passengers´ at bus stops along the way. The line group are supervised by at least two adult volunteers who act as the ´driver´ and ´conductor´ for the journey both to school in the morning and home again at the end of the day. A trolley is often provided on the walking buses to carry heavy bags and musical equipment. As well as providing an ideal opportunity for regular daily exercise and reducing reliance on motor vehicles, the walking bus scheme also provides an excellent environment for children to learn important road safety skills, skills that otherwise aren´t developed until they reach comprehensive school.
