Safety Barrier Replacement Scheme for M4

A £1 million scheme to improve safety barriers and lighting on the M4 around Newport will take 12 weeks.

Work to install a new concrete barrier along a 1.5km stretch of the motorway between junction 24 the Coldra to Christchurch Hill overbridge began on 5 January.

Fifty new lighting columns, made to the latest lighting standards, are also being installed.

Motorists can expect some disruption along the busy stretch of road but all traffic lanes will be kept open during busy periods with lane closures only in place at night.

Traffic management will be in place to protect the workforce, motorists and control the flow of traffic, but the Assembly says every effort is being made to minimise inconvenience to road users, businesses and residents.

The scheme, being carried out by Alun Griffiths Contractors Limited and Capita Symonds on behalf of the Assembly, is part of a programme of works to replace the current central reservation with concrete barriers between junction 24 and 28.

The work is required due to the age and condition of the central reserve safety barriers and lighting columns, and the new concrete barrier will offer new higher safety standards.
