Gwent Police Tackle Off-Road Bikes in Newport

Police have launched an operation to tackle the illegal use of off-road motorcycles in the Pill and Tredegar Park areas of Newport.

Newport West Neighbourhood Policing Team took action earlier this month after residents told officers that off-road bikes were being ridden in an antisocial manner.  Patrols have been stepped up in hotspot areas as a result.

On Saturday July 3rd local officers from the Pill and Tredegar park ward areas confiscated one moped for no insurance and issued four warning notices to illegal riders.  Seven people were stop-searched during the day of action and officers handed leaflets to riders informing them of the legal requirements of off-road bike riding.

Sergeant Sarah Davies, of Newport West Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We have taken this action in response to what the community have told us and our patrols have so far brought significant results.

"We will not tolerate the illegal and antisocial use of off-road motorcycles. These bikes can cause danger and annoyance to other people and riders need to make sure they use their bikes legally and considerately.”

If anyone would like advice on legislation relating to the use of mini motorbikes or off-road vehicles before purchasing one, please send an email to NewportWestNPT@gwent.pnn.police.uk or call 01633 245477.
